Road Trip 2018 - Day Twenty Three - Nashville

I originally thought today we would be doing more exploring in the Tennessee countryside. But no. Captain Spouse said she was in the mood for a city experience. So we trekked the 30 minutes north to Nashville.

I really wasn't sure what to expect as had not done any particular research on Nashville. And as so often the case, what the mainstream thinks is interesting in a place is far from what Captain Spouse and I find interesting. In the case of Nashville, it was an incredible cityscape with a combination of modern and old. It was all assisted by it being an absolutely wonderful clear blue, sunny sky day for picture taking (even if freaking cold! We've gone from bloody sweating summer two weeks ago, to near freezing this morning). Yet there was virtually nothing we found on the internet, the city's official sites, or at the Visitors Bureau that would have indicated this as a major attraction of the city. Well in our case we were glad and happy with what we found.

After lunch we headed off to the Tennessee State Museum. As is often the case with these types of museums we didn't take many pictures. But it was really well done. There is a complex history in Tennessee concerning the taking over of the land from Indian cultures and of course of slavery. There is also had been a big discordance between Eastern Tennessee which is mountainous, hilly and more appropriate to smaller independent farms historically and Western Tennessee which was flatter and could support the slavery driven cotton economy. All of this along with the turmoils of change through the late 19th and early 20th century were well presented.

We have made this a constant in our trip, learning about the history of each state and city we've visited and it has certainly expanded our knowledge, increased our understanding and enriched us.

Let's visit Nashville
Starting with the Modern Skyline

Need to drink and listen to live music at any time of the day including Sunday morning at 10 AM?
Come to Broadway

For the two hockey fans in my family
The home of the Nashville Predators
For a change of pace let's visit churches
There a ton of them
And they all bought their steeples from the same guy who sold the ones to McMinnville

Let's not forget the Music City Center
Which covers about 8 city blocks
And which we found (after the fact)
You are not supposed to be photographing the inside of

And street art of course

A nice dose of grandiose government building is appropriate

Historical High School you requested?

How about the home of the Barber Shop Quartet Society for a change of pace

There was this monument commemorating Tennessee's sacrifices to our country
I looked all over for the perfect shot of this statue
A different angle
Framing it
Use of shadows and lighting?
Until
At last
The perfect shot
On to views of the State Capitol which we will visit tomorrow as it was closed today

By the State Museum I got this shot by a water supported model of the world
I loved the combination of Tennessee in the world, 'Gratitude' and this guy's expression.
Some last shots from within the State Museum itself

Until tomorrow!

Great pictures of the architecture of the city. Architecture is my favorite part of most cities.

I notice the food posts have dropped off. I guess the eating in TN isn't bucking the trend of non-creole mediocre eats?

You're right about the unexpected- I wouldn't have guessed you could visit Nashville and sightsee the whole day without doing something country- music related. I

Bernice - I was pretty amazed at the architecture both old and new and how it is not highlighted by the tourist information.

Alexis - You are correct. It has been pretty much American eats, and you know what that is.

Renee Michelle - Me Too!
