Started the day at Arethra Frankenstein
A breakfast joint nearby foreggs, country ham and grits
Manager Cory saying Hi!
Then we headed into the mountains
Or first stop was Reliance
Where we met the last of living Webb's who have been tending this area since the late 1800's
All that's left of the great mill that used to be here set up by a pioneer in the 1840's by the name of Higdon who was a great land owner
In fact these are not natural rapids but are the remains of a dam used to hold back water for the mill
It would have been located where the bridge is now and was an underflow variety which meant the wheel was more like the wheel of a paddle wheel steamer
This is an old map and it shows where this location used to be called Higdon Mill. It actually has both Names listed
Here is the original appointment of postmaster
And one original land deed of Higdon's holdings
Examples of other old stuff including filing cubicles for mail, cash drawer, cash register, apple peeler
This is a popular area for fishing and you can see with the clear water
Heading to Tellico Plains over mountain roads we saw this old church from 1887 that is still active
With the incongruous soccer ball on the front entrance to bring it up to date
An old barn right next door
Next we were in Tellico Plains where we ate at the down home Tellicafe
Very popular with the biker set who are all over the mountains
The best of our dishes
A soup of green tomatoes and country ham
It was a wonderful concoction with just a touch of sour from the green tomatoes and a salty punch from the country ham
Then it was into the old part of Tellico Plains for some picture taking
The shuttle of the Eldership for this away mission
Captain Spouse doing reconnaissance
Then into the Cherokee National Forest
We drove many twisty turning miles of mountain driving
The warning for the motorcycle drivers seemed to a prod to most to do the opposite
A not so authentic but I still thought photogenic covered bridge
A lovely couple from Mississippi with a cool car that gets all kinds of attention
We were rewarded in the end by getting so elusive fall color
Damn fence around the Dam

a fascinating area! definitely underrated.
Successfully timing a trip to see fall color seems to happen about as often as getting a row all to yourself on the airplane. Glad you got to see a bit of color.
