What Wine Pairs Well With Bologna?

"Why would one care?", you ask.

It dates back to Wife and my eating regime which has evolved over recent years whereby we eat two meals a day. We eat breakfast. And we eat a large meal mid-afternoon between 2:30 and 3:30. This large meal is usually what one would serve for dinner. What has gone by the wayside is lunch along with things like sandwiches and salads. We do eat a large salad on Saturday for our big meal.

A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly had a craving. I wanted a Bologna Sandwich. I floated the idea that we would have this as our 'big' meal on Sunday. And since we were 'just' having a sandwich, if we ate on the early side, we could make popcorn later. Inspired.

Come today, it was time for the meal. But, I was anguished. Our big meal is when I have my one glass of wine (under the new tyranny of the gout regime). What wine to serve with a Bologna Sandwich. I decided that Bologna (which is named for an Italian city), is like Mortadella, also Italian, that an Italian wine would be appropriate. As I have quite a few Barolo in stock, I chose one of those. Barolo is a pretty heavy duty wine, but, as the great Michelin stared chef, Joel Robuchon, said when ask how he paired wine with what he was eating said, "I just drink what I like." So if I want Barolo with Bologna Sandwich, that's what we're having.

Classy, if I say so myself (those pickles are homemade BTW)

The Annual Failure of The Peach Pruning Harvest has begun

Despite all my efforts, despite the efforts of the California illegal immigrant labor, there are as many freaking peaches as usual.

I watched this tree all during its early phases and was convinced that finally this year I had finally succeeded in reducing the number of peaches to a reasonable amount. I am convinced their are supernatural peach pixies that around the time of harvest cast spells which double or triple the number of peaches on the tree.

I will admit that they exceptionally good this season

And while I may suck at restraining peaches from growing I EXCEL with Quinces.

Or I should say Quince.

Yes, this is our annual Quince. This is our second year of growing a single, solitary Quince.

If you are not familiar with Quince, it takes a lot of preparation to get something edible. One Quince of this size will yield about three tablespoons Quince puree. We are giving lottery slots out to see who gets to harvest the Quince.

Particle Physics Research Taking Place In The Tower?

Yesterday I got an email from Wife.

It's subject matter.

ANTIPHOTINOS

"What", I say to myself, "Is an...

ANTIPHOTINO?

A bit of minimal research indicates there is such a thing as an Anti Photon. But no reference for the antiphotino.

Does Wife have her own secret particle accelerator in our backyard?

Are Niece RMG and Wife planning to present some heretofore secret research at some big physics conference angling for a Nobel Prize?

The actual email transmitted pictures I had taken at a recent Rotary event we hosted.

Could it have just been a spell check error?

NAH. I'm going with the secret particle accelerator theory.

Yes! We Are An Incredibly Serious Family

I am sure that many of you when you read my posts related to the family and their visiting might think we are bit less than serious. YOU WOULD BE WRONG. We are a serious and sober family. Cotton Mather and Massachusetts Puritans would feel frivolous compared to the de-I/Wife clan. Even though the #3 arm of the clan is in Sweden, we often have very engaged and deeply thoughtful text chats. Here is an only very slightly edited version of one that took place just this morning related to daughter #3's love for the breakfast cereal, Grapenuts, which she sadly cannot find in Sweden.

3.1 - Mom we have constructed your perfect burger: lettuce or two thin slices of brown bread with stuff in it for burger bun, a two Patty burger with one being halloumi and the other a bean patty, with mushrooms, tomatoes. Onion, aubergine and broccoli, with a side of a salad WITH Dutch frieten and mayo and your dessert is Grapenuts DQ

3A - The burger would be 50%+ broccoli though. And, we are not sure if there would be more Grapenuts than ice cream in the DQ dessert

de-I - Is this something that has actually been achieved or will be achieved soon. Or is this a theoretical construct

3.1 - Theoretical, for now…Until mom sees it of course.

#3 - I will bring Grapenuts next time to DQ...

3.2 – 3.1, are you offering to make it?

de-I -Yes Yes Yes. It must be done now 3.1!

3A - Don't force them to tap the NO GRAPE NUTS!! sign again

#3 - *sigh* if only extra Grapenuts were an option every where

3.2 - I'm looking at you Burger King!!!!

de-I - If Grapenuts were everywhere we would end up with things like frieten with Grapenuts mayo, Grapenuts Potato Salad, and our pizza would come with a packet of Grapenuts to sprinkle over each slice. Best the remain a hard to find US breakfast food

3.2 - Personally I think that mom would love if the world was taken over by Grapenuts.....Buuuut from a health standpoint maybe its best if Grapenuts aren't everywhere

de-I - If you could find something that would bind Grapenuts together, you could form a statue based on your Mother’s image and it would become the goddess of the Grapenuts cult! 😃

3.2 - Whose gonna provide the Grapenuts tho? You think I'm made of Grapenuts?

de-I - I will. I will bring them in September. We will have to hide them from Mums or she will eat them before you can create the idol.

de-I - You should be honored that you are deified as their cult Goddess. This will entitle you to rent a place on the lowest slum slopes of Mount Olympus where the Magical Unicorn Pony God of Travel resides. Then you could become the Magical Sales Manager Goddess of Grapenuts!

#3 - 🤩, MSMGG! Has a nice ring to it.

de-I - I’m telling you deification has a lot of upsides

#3 - All of this just makes me want Grapenuts

3.2 - Are we supposed to be learning of this? Or is it a secret cult?

de-I - Well as one of the cult founders you kind of need to know. How can you sculpt the idol of the demi-Goddess if you are unaware of the cult?

#3 - OMG marshmallow cereal treats made of Grapenuts!! Birthday cake sorted 3.2

de-I – 3.2, The Magical Sales Manager Goddess of Grapenuts speaks!

3.2 - WHAT??? NO!!!!

And thus do we as a family deal with the true and deep issues of the day.

Aftermath - What Life Is LIke Once Vikings Escape

Having the Viking Expeditionary Force from Sweden fulfilled one of my great dreams as the founder and manager of de-I Sandia Outfitters Albuquerque Resort and Penal Colony. Namely having an Entire Family at my beck and call! How Cool Is That! The Elders knew they had to get up early every morning and have my coffee prepared for me. The Youngers were sent into the kitchen to do all kinds of labor intensive food preparation. The Elders were commanded by Wife to replant an ENTIRE GROWN TREE. Finally the Norse Warriors had had enough and tried to escape, only to find that de-I had conspired with the Magical Unicorn Pony God of Travel to have their plane delayed. They had to remain another whole day and thoroughly clean the facility before we allowed them to finally go. Of course, I asked if they had had a good time despite having been put into virtual slavery and reminded them to put a good review up on Google. As 3.2 said, "No problem de-I, we Vikings are used to being slaves." These are the kind of guests that make running Sandia Outfitters worthwhile.

Okay...Now the Serious Part

It was totally lovely having family with us. I was really quite amazed at how well we all got along. Anytime you have family groups together for long periods it can be difficult. Different habits. Different patterns, But all-in-all, it worked out just fine. I think it helps that the house is large enough that everyone can have a place to be alone.

And we got to have family for the holiday. We even did our whole holiday festivities early to take advantage of everyone being here. The #3's were a huge help, doing all kinds of work helping set-up and take down Christmas decorations, helping us with things that needed to be done around the house.

Seriously 3.1 and 3.2 did major work in the kitchen. 3.1 did a ton of the work for the Christmas goodie making as 3.2 got sick and the adults all had other things that needed to be done that day.

Then there was the 'RAVIOLI EPISODE'. The one thing 3.1 and 3.2 said they wanted to try was making Ravioli from scratch. So that we did.

 Aftermath

They cooked up fine. We discovered that despite all the effort, there were not enough to feed everyone so we made additional pasta and sauced it with the filling material of which we had a lot leftover. The general consensus...they were okay, not great. Even though we rolled out the pasta sheets to the thinnest setting, the pasta still seemed to overpower the filling. And, as a number of us commented (me included), we don't actually like ravioli that much. An interesting experiment that will not be repeated.

Being gluttons for punishment, only days later we were at it again making Lasagna for our 'early Christmas' dinner. I totally stuck to my traditional recipe devised decades ago in the 70's.

It came out extremely good.

It was finally time to release the VEFS. We need them to be strong next year to continue the Re-reconquista.

3.2 giving me a goodbye squeeze, asking me to explain the Stockholm Syndrome as she is looking forward to returning.

And I look mournfully at the place where my coffee has been made for over 10 days and realize I am going to have to make my own.

A Viking Expeditionary Force From Sweden Christmas

The word came from far off Malmö Sweden in the early Fall.

"Greetings New Mexicans. I, #3, Chieftainess of the VEFS have determined that our band of hearty warriors and screen watchers wish a warmer place to visit during the Winter break from pillaging. As our blood kin, surely you will let us sneak through your country's inane new international visit system and allow us to soak up your Southwestern Sun. Send us word of your blessings."

How could one not respond to such a well worded invitation. We responded.

"#3, may your warrior skull cup overflow with Kombucha. May we remember their contributions to the Re-Reconquista in Spain this past Fall the the previous Fall as well. We have booked you in the renowned de-I Sandia Outfitters palatial ABQ Foothills Resort and Penal Colony. (When confirming your reservation BE SURE to check the 'resort' box and not the 'penal colony' box.). Simply fill in the request for all your financial accounts with user names and passwords and you will have set yourself up for the most wonderful time her in the Land of Entrapment."

 Last Friday they arrived.

They had had to pay bribes in Dallas to get through the crazy back up of security line to make their flight. But they were truly wowed by the luxury of their accommodations.

"Look Love, We actually have a BED to sleep on this time," 3A exclaimed.

3.2 after experiencing the Japanese style bidet toilet her accommodations featured exclaimed, "This is the greatest toilet experience EVER!"

Our guests were so happy, they broke out into the traditional dance celebration of their people.

And of course, if one has Vikings, one must prepare massive quantities of MEAT!

We have many more activities coming up in the days ahead.

A Very 2.3 Thanksgiving

It started with a call from Indonesia.

"Dad. 2.3 is in the U.S. with nowhere to go for Thanksgiving. Can he visit you and Mom?"

"Um...Sure."

Hence for the first time in longer than I can remember (which in my late 70's is about 30 minutes), we were committed to having family for Thanksgiving.

There were intense conversations prior to the holiday on what our Grandson might want.

de-I - "So 2.3, what might you like to do while you are here?"

2.3 - "I'm fine with anything."

de-I - "Um thanks for the guidance."

We did determine that 2.3 was quite set upon having a traditional Thanksgiving dinner (so much for the idea of having lasagna). With one exception, he didn't want Turkey. Which was fine with us as we are somewhat ambivalent about Turkey ourselves (the bird, not the country. We love Turkey, the country.)

2.3 didn't arrive from Cincinnati until around midnight on Wednesday. That meant I did the majority of the food prep. He is actually a big help normally and I adjusted the schedule so there were some things for him to do. Well, in reality, I was still really getting tired very quickly so was glad to adjust things so I didn't kill myself.

The Thanksgiving dinner itself was not one my tour de force. A lot of things didn't turn out. We had Chicken as the primary meat. I used a recipe I've done for decades but not any time recently. Instead of just following the recipe, I put in a food thermometer. It showed it being done a hour earlier than I would have thought. So I panicked and took it out of the oven. Mistake. It wasn't close to being cooked. This caused all kinds of schedule adjustments. Then there were many other missteps as well.

But despite the Thanksgiving dinner, it was lovely having 2.3 here. He is a very intelligent, articulate, and self-aware person, We had many long conversations on a wide range of subjects.

Graphic demonstration of just how far one has deteriorated from age.

Wife wanted to put up the Christmas tree. It and the boxes of ornaments was buried deep in our storage closet. I was looking at what it was going to take to get it out and thinking, "This is going to take at least an hour with me having to move many heavy things before I even got to the tree and accessories.

2.3 (a strapping young man)  takes one look and declares, "No problem Grandma." He proceeds to step over and around all that is in the way, lift the box over his head and carries it to the living room in minutes. He does the same for the accessory boxes. In no time at all he has the tree out of the box, set up, has helped Wife put on all the extra lights, and has completed the task. I think it might have taken 30 minutes.

The Thanksgiving Dinner Self-Critcism Committee Meeting

2.3 announced that as he was going to be in Cincinnati for three more years and we were, most likely, the only relatives he had in the United States, we could expect him for at least a couple more. Hence it was important that we evaluate every aspect of the Thanksgiving dinner to ensure that we move it in the direction of perfection. Among the decisions were:

  • Trust the Chicken Recipe. Do not Deviate
  • More moisture in the Dressing
  • NO MUSHROOMS in the Dressing (formal objection made by de-I on this decision)
  • Less fat in the Gravy
  • Sweet Potatoes must not resemble potatoes but must be some concoction with tons of sugar and marshmallows (Fine 2.3, they are all yours to make and eat next year)
  • Actually cook and serve the frozen peas instead of bemoaning that you forgot them
  •  Put Vanilla again in the Chocolate Pudding Pie again and risk being deported

In fact, I was so upset about the Vanilla in the Chocolate Pudding (damn it I was just following a recipe), that I made a second batch a couple of days later to make amends.

In all seriousness, it was great having 2.3 here. Any chance we get to see our far flung grandchildren and have serious quality time with  them is a blessing.

Reflections On The Magical Unicorn Pony God Of Travel

It is quite amazing the mind's ability to forget about pain. My flights to and from Ghana were reasonably smooth. Going out, there was a delay with the last flight from Washington to Ghana. That led to a long delay in getting my luggage when I arrived. But in the whole scheme of things, it wasn't a big deal. On the return, my flight back to Albuquerque from Washington was delayed as well. But again, that wasn't a big deal actually.

So my mind was thinking, "Oh does each traveler have their own personal incarnation of the Magical Unicorn Pony God of Travel?" Does it age as you do so its abilities are lessened? I was going to write a whole post on this phenomenon.

Then I decided I should go back and check the archives of posts related to MUPGT.

Oops.

Am I getting dementia? Since 2022, there has been a non-stop series of battles with MUPGT. All the chaos in Ghana. Wife's security ordeal going to Amsterdam. Getting from Alicante to Copenhagen. Epic trying to get to Malaysia. 54 hours trying to get from Ghana to New Mexico.

Now instead of feeling mellow and complacent, I'm wondering what battle awaits us the next time we travel.

Eldership Sweden Mission - You Know It's Swedish Spring If It Is Above Freezing

Ensign Almada's Personal Log:

Were the Captain (de-I) and the Commander (Wife) having some kind of personal inside joke when they saw me, a Salarian, noted for our planet's intensely warm, humid climate, and recruited her for the World of Gothenburg mission? We were scheduled to do our first day of away missions to explore the local area where we will be setting up base. Here is how it went.

Wife - "de-I, have you happened to see what the surface conditions are today?

de-I - "No. It's late spring there. Should be nice.

Wife - "Do you consider 5 degrees C (40 degrees F), raining and windy nice

de-I - "Uh no. Actually it sounds like it sucks. But, dear, aren't you scheduled to be the lowly ensign doing the initial away mission reconnaissance?"

Wife - "No way! It's your turn."

de-I then looked across the bridge. He beckoned Wife to do the same. I knew what they were looking at. They both smiled the predators' smile. I tried as hard as I could to be innocuous and look busy...very busy...importantly busy.

The two renowned ElderFleet Seniors said in unison, "We have Almada!"

"Why did my partner watch officer suddenly come down with appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, massively low blood pressure, and an almost terminal ingrown toenail just before we were to set off causing him to be evacuated from the Eldership?" I thought, wailing inside.

Thus I found myself the first Eldership officer on the surface of Gothenburg, freezing my ass off, trying to keep the rain protecting umbrella from blowing away, counting the 15 different Kebab joints between my landing area and the site of the local transportation hub. I was to survey the bus and tram stop locations. The first I found fine. The second I had to wander up and down in the cold, wet until I realized it was actually below ground level.

Thankfully, de-I and Wife had been doing some surveying from the ship and directed me to the Hemkop supermarket which blessedly was in an enclosed mall. I was to shop for certain food specialties like 'cheese in slices' and 'Dr. Pepper (diet if you please) and corn nuts. Then there was the:

Weird Raw Cured Fish (Pickled Herring)

Captain de-I said it was great.

And I brought up for them a rather pedestrian Roast Chicken with Cole Slaw and Potato Salad. Choosing the potato salad was tough as there were so many different options (as a member of a species that only consumes mineral matter all this 'local food' stuff is a bit of a challenge.) which both Wife and de-I declared delicious.

I am going to take myself to the holo deck, dial up Salaria at the height of summer, and try and thaw out.

Eldership Mission Sweden - Preparing To Launch

Ensign Almada's Personal Log:

I believe I am the first Sarlarian to serve under Commander Wife and Captain de-I. We are readying the Eldership which will launch momentarily. It is a very curious thing to be on a vessel that usually only has a crew of two. Most ships in the Elderfleet have many more. I truly believe that my comrade and I were taken on this mission simply so the Seniors have some one to send down on away missions with the dreaded red tunic.

Excuse me, but I must sign off. The two are arguing over who will be in command first and who will have latrine cleaning duty first. Oops. They've remembered I'm here. Off to the latrines I go.

Eldership Revival

At Elder Fleet Command HQ, two young officers were on watch. Looking down from from their enclosed perch above the large docking area holding the Elderships taking repairs or getting outfitted for their next mission. The Eldership closest to them was the famous Eldership One, commanded since it's commissioning by the renowned elder travelers de-I and Wife.

Rumor had it that the One might be decommissioned. Wife had come back from its last mission seriously injured. When the One's next mission was scrubbed, the whispering had grown louder. It was a fact of life at Elder Fleet Command, all who took missions were going find an end at some point. Maybe this was the end for the famous couple.

One of the officers suddenly pointed down. "Look! There! By the entrance ramp. Isn't that Commander, First Officer, Maintenance Officer, Accounting Clerk, Hydroponic Gardening Head, Room Maintenance Cleaner Wife?"

"By the Great Maker, you're right." He went to his screen and tapped up the upcoming missions. "You're not going to believe this. The One is scheduled to go off on mission this Tuesday!"

"But where are they going to get a crew on such notice."

Even though the two renowned Eldership pioneers were known to carry out most of the functions of their Eldership, there were occasions where additional crew were required. Their ruminations were interrupted by a commanding presence. In their command room was none other than the near mythic Captain, Weapons Officer, Revenue Officer, Navigation Ensign, Chauffeur, and Cook...de-I!

"Gentlemen, I am glad to hear you notice that my co-command Wife is at the Eldership One. And yes we are leaving soon on a mission. We are in need of crew for this one. I inquired of Elder Fleet Command and was notified that the two of you are next up for off station assignment. So welcome to our mission to the World of Gothenburg. Here are your uniforms."

The two officers stared, hardly being able to speak. For the tunics of each uniform were RED!

Good News - Bad News

For all those who may be wringing your hands on what you see happening in the world around us, I would have you reference the Hindu cycle of Yugas. Without getting into an incredibly complex and esoteric discussion of cosmology, there four Yugas or Cosmic Ages. Each age has its own characteristics, We have just entered Kali Yuga.

Bad News - Kali Yuga is the WORST cosmic age. All sense of honor and thought of others and the whole go out the window. Basically it is the Shit Yuga.

Good News - Kali Yuga is the shortest of the four Yugas

Bad News - Kali Yuga will still last 432,000 years

Good News - It started in 3102 BCE, we are actually in the very beginning of Kali Yuga. So you, I and all our children will be long gone before the shit really hits the fan.

Bad News - Kali Yuga still sucks, even at this early stage

Good News - It is WAY easier to achieve enlightenment and grace in Kali Yuga because the standards have dropped so low. So just keep being a good person.

Hubris In The Form Of Lasagna

Hubris

English picked up both the concept of hubris and the term for that particular brand of cockiness from the ancient Greeks, who considered hubris a dangerous character flaw capable of provoking the wrath of the gods. In classical Greek tragedy, hubris was often a fatal shortcoming that brought about the fall of the tragic hero. Typically, overconfidence led the hero to attempt to overstep the boundaries of human limitations and assume a godlike status, and the gods inevitably humbled the offender with a sharp reminder of their mortality.

For months I have been thinking and talking of making lasagna. It is a dish that I've made since I was first married and I've lost track of the number of times I've made it. In the beginning, it was always associated with Christmas. I made a very specific, personalized version that was made to Wife's specific liking. As our children got into elementary school, they preferred we make pizza on the holiday and that became the family tradition. But I kept making lasagna at other times of the year. Always it was the occasional 'big event' dish because it took a lot of effort the way I did it.

Then I started to make pasta from scratch. This led me to become more creative with the lasagna genre motivated by the lighter homemade pasta noodles. It had been a quite a while since I'd made one. It's the kind of dish that serves a lot so its nice to have a group to serve it to. Cooking for large numbers seems to be one of those things that one lets go off as age starts eating into one's physical abilities. So I hadn't the motivation.

But, with all the talking of my making lasagna prowess, I decided I was going to do it this holiday. I had in my mind a number of enhancements to make the process more efficient. Since Wife was my only customer, I would make the 'classic' version. I would create an epic blog post going step-by-step through the process to the glorious outcome. However, as my grandiose vision arose, the Gods saw the need bring things in line.

A Tale of Death by a Thousand Cuts

It was not a single catastrophic failure that brings about the hubris like end to our story. It is rather a series of minor errors that combined lead to de-I's downfall. And since I am writing this as a mea culpa to my sin of hubris, I will go through all the gory details of my downfall

I went through much planning and effort to make for an easier time on the day of actual preparation. Here is everything laid out and ready to go. Though in that preparation, I already had planted seeds of the unpleasant future

From the upper left corner going clockwise - Cheese sauce, Italian sausage, Meatballs, Tomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Below is my beloved 1950's something roasting pan I use only for making lasagna. (A note on the Cheese sauce - in Northern Italy they like to use Bechamel, a cream sauce. In Southern Italy they like Ricotta cheese. As most American Italians are of Southern Italian descent, Ricotta is the default ingredient. I didn't like either so I added cheese to my Bechamel. The problem with this, as we will see, is you lose a structure providing ingredient that Ricotta provides.)

You will note the Cheese sauce because it was made the day before had solidified. That was a root cause of one of my errors. You will not see that the Tomato sauce had a flaw as well. I like cooking it with some bone-in meat to give it more depth. But I chose a cut with a lot of smaller bones and connective tissue. These fell apart in the cooking process. I was able to fish out most. But some small bone pieces made it through. These were Very Unpleasant to run into in the final product)

Left to make on the day of, the pasta

Don't forget that all important Italian Semola flour!

In fact the pasta turned out extremely well...accept for one problem I will uncover below.

On to assembly - a layer of sauce on the bottom followed by the first layer of pasta

You might notice one of the unforeseen flaws here, the delicate nature of the pasta.

Our next layer is the Mozzarella, Meatballs, with another layer of sauce

Here we find another error, the amount of sauce. It is a delicate balance. You need enough sauce so the lasagna isn't dry. But too much at it will be soupy and not hold its shape.

Our next layer will add the Cheese Sauce, the Italian Sausage, and more Tomato Sauce

Two more errors - it's not easy to notice in the middle picture above but I put that whole container of Cheese Sauce in because it was solid and I couldn't get it to spread out. But when I cooked it, it all melted creating a lot of liquid. And I put a lot more Tomato Sauce on. We're like the lasagna version of the Titanic at this point not realizing our doom is upon us.

The last layer of Pasta with more Tomato Sauce and a coating of Parmigiano Reggiano.

Then into the oven

Where I proceeded to make a series more errors. I had seen on a recent video where they cooked the lasagna at 350 degrees covered in foil for 30 minutes and then under the broiler for 10 minutes to crisp the top. HOWEVER, should have remembered that because of the size of my lasagnas and the effect of altitude that I needed to cook it at a higher temperature. And I've never covered my lasagna so why I decided to do so now was a mystery.

It took much longer to cook as a result. When I put it under the broiler, I was distracted because one of the daughters called. It ended up partially burning on the top! The final blow.

Wife and I were starving. Under the best of circumstances one should let his rest to firm up a bit. Historically, my first day lasagnas have always been on the 'wet' side. But this was a soup. A major contributor? The Pasta. It was great pasta. Just the wrong pasta for this application. The delicate pasta simply didn't hold its shape in all this liquid. Store bought firmer pasta would have been a much better choice.

The sad looking plate

Now here is the real irony. The flavor of it was really good! It was spot on the classic version. BUT I DISCOVERED I REALLY DON'T LIKE THAT VERSION ANY MORE!  Our tastes change at every aspect of life, and I just don't enjoy the Tomato Sauce forward version that this is. I like my more delicate, meat sauce versions that go with my homemade pasta.

So my Hubris event was complete.

My Diet Feels Like The Lusitania

This time of year is hardly the best for trying to lose weight. But coming back from Europe SO overweight made it mandatory. Wife's blood clot scare and current slow recovery has made it easier for me to cut back on the food. Not even Thanksgiving really dented the progress.

Then came my birthday yesterday.

Actually, all was going along as planned, just like that ill-fated liner in 1917. It would be a day like any other. Like the passengers on that liner I could see the destination coast, in my case a very low calorie saute shrimp, bok choy, and mushrooms.

Then, like the U-Boat that struck the Lusitania, it struck.

One doesn't think of Wife as a 'U-Boat'. But she comes into my office. Sits in the chair next to my desk. She says,

"de-I, I need to talk to you about something."

Those words rarely are a good thing to hear.

"I've been dreaming about pizza." She looks at me with these round, puppy dog eyes. "I dream about being denied pizza. It's your birthday. We need to do something special for you...well," she admits, "for me." She smiles fetchingly.

I can feel the thud of the torpedoes into the ship of my diet. It is listing. Will there be room in the lifeboats? I doubt it...at least for tonight.

The pizza was delicious.

Europe Fall 2024 - Winding Up El Campello & A Bit Of MUPGT Fun

Wife and I are ending our European tour tomorrow. We will fly to Amsterdam. Then the next day we will return to the United States.

This morning we were returning the grandchildren to VEFS HQ and had to get them to the airport very early. Of course the Magical Unicorn Pony God of Travel had to have a little bit of fun with us. #3 had given us the airline's very specific instructions on how the girls were to be handled. Of course we get there and the airline does everything different. We needed their Swedish residency proof (which no one had said anything about). So we're calling the parents (thank you 3.1) to get a picture of them at 5:30 in the morning. Then instead of the airline taking them through security, they said Wife and I needed to do that. THEN our access passes wouldn't work going through security so we had to find someone to let us in. But in the end we sent our beloved mercenaries back to Sweden where they will train, grow stronger, and hopefully join us in the future for more Re-Reconquista fun.

A few miscellaneous pictures

 Final Sunsets

Our team of Swedish Viking Mercenaries enjoy the beach before heading back to the Norseland.

Europe Fall 2024 - R&R For The VEFS At Valencia Aquarium

After the glorious victory of the Viking Expeditionary Force from Sweden (aka 3.1 & 3.2), it was decided to make use of their plundered Euros to visit the Aquarium at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. And as 2.2 (as readers know from our previous post) is also in residence in Valencia, it was a great way to reconnect the cousins.

After another joyful driving experience in Valencia picking up 2.2 and getting to the City of Arts and Sciences (insert dripping sarcasm here), we immediately gave back a huge amount of our plunder from Alicante paying for tickets to get into the Aquarium.

 Mmmm Maybe Not

I keep saying I want to do a photo shoot totally focused on the City of Arts and Sciences. Hasn't happened yet but hope it will

Things that remind the grandchildren of their grandfather

The Rebranding of de-I

"Listen my trusty steed I have a very important mission. You must let his man become your master!"

"On to Victory!"

3.1 thinks this should become by LinkedIn Profile Picture. What do you think?
