This is a brief post about a fine dining experience.
But it is more than that. It really is not a foodie post but a post about service...service that creates an experience one can truly savor.
Generally speaking, Captain Spouse and I do not do fine dining. We just find that the overall quality of the experience never seems to be worth the high amount of cost. Another thing is as we've gotten older, we just can't eat that much and we have a hard time eating a lot in the evening. But when we made our plans for this trip, a good work friend of mine, KK, said, "OMG we are going to be in NOLA at the same time as you. We have reservations at Commander's Palace. Would you like to join us?" Wife and I decided that yes that would be a good thing to try.
I made a conscious decision that I was not going to do the foodie photo journalism thing. Instead, I just wanted to enjoy the experience and enjoy being with our friends. We hadn't really socialized with them for a couple of years. But it turned out we had a great evening.
The real high point of the whole experience was the unbelievable service. I mean the whole experience from being greeted on arrival, going to the bar and having our drinks, talking to Max the bartender whose most recent girlfriend was from Taos Pueblo, to Jared our captain who kibitzed with us the whole night, to watching the clearing of our table but a waiter and bus person who stacked up the dishes they took off with marching band precision.
Don't get me wrong, the food was very good. But honestly, I would not come back to Commander's Palace for just the food. I would RUN BACK for the most wonderful feeling of being taken care of with (as Captain Spouse said) not the slightest feeling of being out of place or condescended to.

I find that many of the good restaurants in new orleans have a special, lovely brand of hospitality.
