Seeing San Remo Or Trial By Local Italian Road

I've come to the conclusion that Wife and I really suck when it comes to researching our trips. I mean we to actually make an effort to read about things and figure out what an area is like. But when we actually hit the ground things are never the way we anticipated they would be. I'm pretty sure that it is fairly common knowledge that the French and Italian Riviera our highly densely populated areas. But in all our reading while there certainly are mentions of all the people, it didn't sink in that this whole area is like one giant city with town after town connected one to another in a megalopolis.

Hence we made the decision that we were going to take the 'scenic route to go the fairly short distance from where we are staying to the well known Italian resort town of San Remo. This involved being stuck in bumper to bumper type traffic for about an hour and a half. It would take half that long if one took the Autostrada.

Anyway here are the latest pictures of the adventures.

We have views that you'd die for.

Literally die for considering the narrow road with five sharp, steep switchbacks you have to take to get here.

I had a conference call with a client that I did on our balcony looking over the Mediterranean.

I mean honestly, doing business like this is way cool

Our mode of operation is to research the address of a parking garage in the center of town and use that to program our Tom Tom GPS

What says classy resort town more than a pink fountain?

I didn't see much of this written up but San Remo has a totally cool old town. It is fully in use and it has all kinds of alley ways and covered streets. As it is built into the side of a hill you get a feeling for what life might have been like a 800 years ago.

And the town has a fort whose history is relatively non-glorious

We had some good culinary experiences

Two words - Pasta, Gelatto

We were really hungry when we got there and it was cold too. We were lucky to find a whole restaurant area (AFTER we chose this place)

They offered a wide variety of pastas and a wide variety of sauces.

You asked the woman who worked there what pasta went best with what sauce.

Our two favorites were a carbonara and a pesto, the pesto with some local pasta that I didn't write down.

Outside the restaurant was this little place for the dog lovers in the city

Then after our walk and climb through the old city we rewarded ourselves with the first 'official' gelatto of the trip.

This is a combination of a dark chocolate and one called 'arencino' which was chocolate with booze cured cherries and nuts in it. CRAZY GOOD!

I think I may have mentioned that Wife really adores gelatto.
