Part Three of The Adventures Of de-I And The Temples Overrunning With Tourists! - Ankgor Wat

And now to Angkor Wat, THE best known of the Khmer ruins.  Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century and predates the Bayon Temple.

Entrance causeway from the west gate

Statue of Vishnu

Apsara

Through the gate to the temple proper

Carvings illustrating the Ramayana, a Hindu sacred text

Famous inscription announcing by the king a change from Hinduism to Buddhism

What was one of a number of pools for ritual bathing

Library.  All of the temples in the Angkor complex had libraries associated with them.

Into the main temple

There were lots of Apsaras

The main temple complex

Personally, I believe that the abundance of Apsaras prove the great prevalence of plastic surgery in Khmer times.

To the upper level

Incomplete carving of Hindu god because of the conversion of kingdom to Buddhism

Angkor Wat is still an a active Buddhist religious site
This is the main Buddha at the top

Wow, those pictures are amazing, and the work that went into the carving is overwhelming. What an awesome trip.
