Euro 2012 - England/Spain Part 9 - Cream Tea Shall Be MIne!

Wife has been very good about doing her back exercises through out this trip.

Munchkin felt it would be much more effective with additional resistance

Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door and Corfe Castle are on the agenda for today our last day in England.  These are areas along the coast to the east of us.  We check out of the cottage in the morning and drive out to Lulworth Cove.  This is an almost enclosed body of water that was formed when rising waters after the last Ice Age broke through a coastal wall 10 thousand years ago allowing the sea to rush in and erode the softer chalk rock behind the break in.  There were plenty of places to hike up for better views which we took advantage of.  This naturally led to many photo op moments.  I was in full camera Sherpa mode.

We had a nice lunch with some of the best beer and cider of the trip and then went on to Durdle Door.  This is an eroded rock arch over the sea in a nice secluded beach setting.  More hiking to get down and more photo ops.

Then on to Corfe Castle.

Corfe Castle is yet another castle dating back to Saxon times and then being added to and improved over the course of the Middle Ages.  It was destroyed during the Oliver Cromwell revolution.  The owners were supporters of the crown and resisted successfully but ultimately voluntarily surrendered.  The wife of the owner who had led the defense of the siege was allowed to depart with respect but the Cromwellites then destroyed the castle so it would not be a source of further resistance.

After the castle we had our cream tea experience.  This was something 3A said we must try.  It consists of the tea plus scones (much softer than US scones) with clotted cream and strawberry jam.   I liked the clotted cream which is not sweet with the jam.

Hey! What's that little hand doing?  It's trying to filch my scone!

Then we drove 2.5 hours to Gatwick airport where we stayed at an airport hotel and had a lovely meal of Shell gas station sandwiches, chips, and packaged mini-scotch eggs (don’t ask).

Wish we could be there with you guys, but it looks to be quite a number of years before we get back to Europe :( Hope you;re having a fabulous time!

If and when I finally get the chance to really travel, I know who to talke to. These pictures are gorgeous.

The scones look delicious. I'm sorry you had to eat gas station food. That must have been a very dire emergency!
