Around The World In 72 Days - Yangshuo Retreat

We're still on Saturday the 14th. We've reached our end terminal on the Li River, the 'Quiet' tourist town of Yangshuo.

According to my research, Yangshuo is a small (300 thousand people...practically a village by Chinese standards) town focused on tourism. It is said to have little of the noise and chaos of big Chinese cities. So after the cacophony of our non-stop pitch PA on our Li River cruise, I am looking forward to this.

 Enjoying the tranquility of Yangshuo

Please note, we are not even close to being the 'high season' yet. Things will get way, way busier as the real tourist time kicks in.

According to Venerable Tour Operator Pooh EVERY Chinese city remotely catering to tourism has an 'old town', and they pretty much all look the same. There are a plethora of shops merchandising everything imaginable. Color and design are everywhere.

 LANGSHU IMPRESSION LIU SANJIE

We went to this very famous production after dinner. Here is a write up from a Chinese tourist website. (Go to the site for the detailed information)

"Impression Liu Sanjie was choreographed by Zhang Yimou, one of the most notable Chinese film directors. The show is a must-see for visitors who spend the night in Yangshuo.

It is a spectacular night show combining music and light, ethnic songs and dances, using the Li River and surrounding karst mountains as the stage and backdrop."

It is not ideal using a phone to capture images. You can go online and to YouTube to get much better. However, I do think these give you a slightly better sense of 'being there'.

SIGNS OF THE WORLD

Truly a 'Smell Museum' is a gift from any municipality

This requires some explanation. I saw this in front of me while at a urinal. I had no idea what it was about. Showing it to my guide it is evidently a slightly off-color joke about a couple separating and who would get possession of the children. Why this is in a public toilet, I have no idea.

Um, Hunting Pigs? Pigs that smell out meat like they do truffles?

Um, Giving you things that are slippery like shrimp? Some kind of slippery shrimp that is a delicacy?

Maybe an idea that should be seen in the U.S.?

But I assume I can push with sharp object. Or I can push with hard object. But I should not push with good fencing form for sure!

Do they still do tours of the wet markets? Maybe that's old hat for Lisa and Tim now. That show looked... long.

I have to say, when I think of quiet, tranquil places to visit, China (as well as India) does not jump to mind.
Did you enjoy the show? It looks like... a lot.

Yes, RMG, we did enjoy it. It wasn't really as long as it seems.
