Portugal-Amsterdam 2022 - #7 - Faro

We're falling behind! Yesterday we were in the main city of the Algarve, Faro. It has a nice, compact old town with easily accessible parking. And was only 20 minutes from our rental.

  The City Walls

And entering the City Gates

Welcomed by the Legendary First King of Portugal - Alfonso the Lighthearted

Main Attraction - the Cathedral (shock and amazement)

One must stealthily sneak up on it as it gets spooked by tourist incursions

The exterior is a hodgepodge of styles and renovations over centuries

While the exterior is somewhat plain, the interior is ornate as all get out.

Can anyone tell me what the symbolism of this is?

Tile work - of course

But what fascinated me was this crazy organ done in a Chinese motif!

The Chapel of Bones (to remind you of your own mortality)

The Ark of the Holy Vending Machine

Wife Finds the Path to The Light

And finds the world at her feet

The view from the Cathedral Tower

On to the Municipal Museum which covered everything from its foundations during the Phoenician period to the present

Example of Phoenician writing from the 800-700 BC time period

Roman Mosaic Work

Modern works

An Italian Sculputure - An Ode to Pasta

The Museum Building itself is a Medieval Cloister

Visitors from France and the U.S. meet

The laundry pickings were slim

As was the street art

Concluding with Signs of the World

The Algarve has a serious problem with non-native, invasive plants. It is taking the direct approach to eliminating them.

Portugal-Amsterdam 2022 - #6 - Low Key Olhão

Olhão is rather overlooked among the many sites in the Algarve. It is an active fishing port and despite lacking in significant historic monuments, it is not lacking in history. It is also the gateway to the Eco-tourism that goes into the massive natural park that covers the estuaries of this part of the Atlantic coast. We had originally intended today to be a rest day as we were pretty tired from our previous days. Also the weather was supposed to be lousy. But we woke up to sunshine and decided to head to Olhão which is only about 15 minutes from where we are staying. It was a pleasant morning's outing.

Olhão is all about its waterfront

Its local market

Active fishing operations

It seems to be a town in transition. There lots of rundown buildings.

But work being done to refurbish them too. I wonder if it is all the expat money coming in?

We saw this guy working away. He evidently has been working on many of the buildings in the area.

Here is what they look like before

And after

Olhão has a nice central plaza

It is especially friendly to avian tourists

And I know...I KNOW...

You have been waiting for this...

Holding your breath for...

SIGNS OF THE WORLD

The danger of Escorregar snakes should never be underestimated!

I had to do some research  when I saw this...

But this commemorates the very spot where Gumby committed suicide after one too many Mr. Hand abuses.

You can be away from Amsterdam but that doesn't mean Amsterdam is away from you!

And under the heading of when life gives you lemons, make lemonade...

...if a town doesn't give you laundry, make your own!
