Europe Fall 2024 - Assault On Denia Castle

Another day, another visit to a town on Spain's Mediterranean coast featuring an Old Town on a hill and a port. I am sure some of you are thinking, "de-I get a life! Surely there are towns that ONLY have hill based old towns or ONLY have ports." Maybe so but until we've run out of every freaking one we can possibly get to within reasonable distance of El Compello, we're sticking with this combination.

Denia is really in the same vicinity as Calp and Altea. BUT, it has a REALLY BIG CASTLE THAT'S REALLY HIGH UP! Just the thing for the elder adventurer! This is on of those you start on it and realize, "Shit! This is going to be a really big climb on not so easy ground and I'm about 15 years beyond my optimum to do date for this!" Nonetheless, we persevered. So let's get into some pictures of a Med Coast Town with Old Town and Port!

BUT WAIT!

Obligatory Sunrise Pictures from the Apartment First

Having been now to quite a few of these the towns and cities in this area, I can tell you some are quite photogenic with interesting cityscapes, while others are...well...not. Denia, in my opinion, is in the last group. It's pretty rectilinear and the buildings are not all that interesting.

On To Denia Castle

It's Big

There is allegedly accessible access

Maybe if you are an older mountain goat

Beware All Ye Who Enter Here!

Views of the City and the Port from the Castle

Terraces from the 19th century when the castle grounds were used for raisin grape growing

 Historical Replicas

Replica of a Christian Siege Engine

Authentic Recreation of Almohad Dynasty Cell Tower from the 13th Century

Diorama of 9th Century Umayyad Dynasty Espouses Fotograficus

We leave the castle with all our muscles and joints still functioning even if sore

SIGNS OF THE WORLD

Yes, even in little Denia the dark Valencian cult of buying bodies is found

Boobs, Ghosts, Avocados, Eggs, Flowers, Cameras...I have no idea what this represents

It is kind of funny how surprised you two are every time you find a castle atop a huge hill. But you are both indomintable, I grant you that!
